print layout PDF saving issue

I am getting the following message when trying to save my print layout as a PDF to print from my plotter. This has happened a few times, with patterns that are not large. 

"The image file size exceeds the limit and cannot be saved. Please try again after resizing the image."

Suggestions on settings that I could have wrong or another solution?

  I was able to print using the export as pdf approach. But I would still like to use the print layout function as that saves time with layout, and also prints with smaller lines. 

  Here are images of how I have tried to print from the layout function and the messages I am still getting. This is a new issue for me as I have been printing successfully from the print layout window so far.
