    There is a simple trick here > switch on edge curvature to the pattern piece so you get more edges in the mesh then lower the particle mesh density to something like 5mm. Basically the more vertices and edges the more collision or resistance to 'breaking through' the mesh - so that makes it easier to tie a knot without it all falling through. When you tie knots you want a higher polycount. Simple CLO3D physics.

    Hello emixmh,as ottoline suggested the more geometry the less the mesh pass trough. 
    To set up correctly keep the add thickness collision value above 5, when everything is in place and stable you can lower that value step by step till the limit.
