How to make fabric drape straight down
I am working on a curtain panel and need the fabric to fall/drape straight down, as fabric would in real life. Ideally I would also like it to fall into undulating column-like folds, but first I need to stop the fabric from bowing out to the sides. As you can see in the images below, the sides of the panel curve backwards and outwards, almost like air is being blown at it from behind, and the panel returns back to this position after I try to pull it forward/down in Simulation mode. This example is actually less extreme than the bowing that has occurred in other panels I have made.

I have tried using a frozen template sewn to the bottom of the panel to draw the fabric into an improved shape, but the panel still bows slightly out to the sides in the middle of the panel.

Has anyone experienced a similar issue while making a garment or home product? Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated!

Hello juliaableson.
We have tried to replicate the issue but it didn't appear.

Your wrong drape might come from several issues:
1. The wrinkles of the top part of the curtain should be more or less evenly distributed. I see a lot of pins on the top of the curtain in your case. An idea: hang this part of the stick. Then gradually shrink the weft of this pattern piece with simulation in between till you reach for example 60%. Then, set some pins on the top, always at approximately the same distance. To finish, return shrinkage weft to its original number gradually with simulation in between.
2. An issue with the folded sides. Here, I would recommend creating pattern pieces and not folding a big one on the sides. Avoid their overlapping by creating the vertical panel just til the internal line of the horizontal panel. Don't forget to TURN the seams.

3. In your case it is not the cause of the problem but changing the physical properties of fabric or choosing different presets of fabrics can make a fabric heavier or stiffer and influence its drape.
Kindest regards, CLO

Thanks for your response! I tried the method you described above, and it seemed to help some (the sides are not bowing out and back!). However, my panel is still not draping in nice, even folds all the way down the length of the panel like you achieved in your example.
Did you have to keep adjusting the pins as you gradually increased the shrinkage weft back to 100%? I started with more pins and gradually took some out to give the fabric more room to spread out, but I am having trouble getting the scrunching to look natural and even, especially at the sides of the panel.
I used cotton canvas for this panel. I tried changing it to a .zfab file for an actual window panel fabric we use, but it didn't improve the drape.
Thanks so much!

I am also wondering what fabric you used, as it may explain the ease with which you achieved the folds in your panel. Could you please advise? Was it one of the default fabrics in the CLO Fabric library?
Thank you!
