Dear carissahawkes, you can create garments in whichever way you wish. If you do not have access to other patterns, you can use the blocks in the Modular Configurator (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xNoY_aIeWMM) as starting points, or you can use the 3D Pen (Avatar) to mold pattern pieces from the avatar's form (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6nKllTXUtP0). You can also create block patterns from scratch (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXZeSqCOi1Q).
The active pattern outline is without seam allowance, so what you are seeing is the actual sewing outline. If you wish to add seam allowance to your patterns, please use the seam allowance tool: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ymzkFaceBek&t=492s
