Flattening causes a crash

I'm importing a obj file about 3.5M in size. Software keeps crashing on flattening. Would be great if I could upload the file for someone else to test.

  When you flatten a shape, you have to be careful it doesn't form a non manifold closed shape when developed, eg a figure of '8' falls into this category (because no neighborhood of their crossing point is homeomorphic to Euclidean 1-space).

  So any developed surface that could fall into this category requires a single line cut to be placed on the inner to outer area being developed so this potential mathematical hazard can be avoided, bring the unfolded pattern back into the realm of a 'plausible' Two-dimensional manifold.
