Expressing Trims using Topstitch
Hi Everyone,
Just wanted to share some different ways you can customize the topstitch tool!
In my examples I applied texture images for Swarovski crystals, trim tape, grosgrain or just a simple binding. See below the sizes I used and how I cropped the images:
All you need to do to create custom topstitches is select a topstitch in the Object Browser and locate it's Property Editor. Then change the "Type" to Texture and simply import your image you wish to repeat. Topstitch can be applied to pattern edges and also internal lines, which makes it handy to quickly apply trims or mock up style lines/binding. See below for the settings to look out for:
For the red binding, I simply created a small rectangular repeat particularly for curved lines. When you create your own, you may notice small gaps in between the repeated graphic as it follows any sort of curved lines. You can adjust the topstitch spacing to -.1 and it should close the gap. The thinner your texture is the more seamless your repeat will be! People all always curious how to quickly visualize binding, particularly for sportswear rather than create thin pattern pieces to sew onto a garment. I find this to be a nice alternative!
You can always add normal maps and apply fabric types to the topstitch for added effects/realism. See working window vs. render below:
Hope some of you find inspiration from this!
