Delete extra points on segment from imported pdf

When importing a pdf file I am trying to remove all of these extra points on the line. I try to marquee and turn to curve point but it says the points are too close together.  Whats the best way to go forward in editing this pattern?

  Yes, you are correct that there are way too many Segment Points currently. Once way may be to open this in Ai first and remove many of the excess points and instead use Bezier Curves. 

  The other would be to Zoom in and use the Edit Pattern tool to first remove a few points individually first. Right now there may be so many points and if there is any curvature in the segment area they cause loops, which is why you cannot currently delete them in large groups
