Anyone rendering outside CLO and using a Colorway type of solution?
Hey Community.
We are taking our bag renders to the next level for this customer. We will add props (candles, bottles, lotions, etc.) and we are testing taking the bags as OBJs to Blender, 3DS Max or another software that might work.
The most painful point of taking it out is trying to replicate the Colorway feature, where you will open a panel, add colorways and simply change materials in an orderly fashion.
Does anyone have tried a similar solution?
We are testing some solutions. In any case I will share here with you what the workflow looks like and later post in Tips and Tricks.

Modo from Foundry has had this feature for a while for drag & drop of material presets onto the object group to update in the real time render viewer. It was pretty innovative when they introduced it about 5 years ago and it has gotten better. I think it is probably what paved the path to Foundry Colorway which does exactly what you are describing.
Andy Brown with Foundry describes the the preset browser process here https://youtu.be/CVE9W41QVPQ
Also this video shows a soft body bag being created and the preset browser being used to quickly change the color scheme of the bag with real time render updates. https://youtu.be/fAdOkbMAg3A
For Colorway you can check it out here https://colorway.foundry.com/ You will notice that under the Tips & Tricks on the Colorway site that the bag from the previous link is being used to change to the different variations.

Wow! That is so amazing. I don't use Modo, but it could be the best time to start.
Thanks!

You are welcome.
Every 3D application has its own strength and weakness. Though obviously that line has blurred over the years. For the commercial applications I've always viewed Maya as best for character animation; Max for gaming assets (though I'm surprised Autodesk hasn't cut the rope and merged Max into Maya) and I honestly do not know Max's place anymore; Cinema4D for motion graphics; Lightwave 3D was for excellent sub-divisional modeling and photo realistic renderer. Lightwave 3D development became stagnate in the early 2000s and the original and core developers broke away from NewTek to create what became Modo. It started out as purely a modeling application and it grew from there. Modo was built for the user to customize it to their workflow while being also intuitive. I remember in the forums someone would suggest some feature and a few months later in a dot release the feature would be implemented. Modo is like the jack of all trades and has kicked Lightwave off the pedestal for the fast go-to 3D application for modeling in my opinion.

Thanks so much Otto. I've been learning about the Cryptomatte in Blender 2.8 and his relatives Render Elements in VRay. I didn't know about prism. I will check it out.
I imagine that with Cryptomatte you could automate the different texture colors in Photoshop. Is that how is done?
I also found another solution with Blender where you would load the textures in a single folder and selecting Image Sequence directly in the Image Texture node. Have a look:
Let's keep these ideas coming! Maybe CLO will help us bring in more advanced materials so shots with props don't need to be rendered outside.
