Thank you ottoline, my issue was not with creating the effect, but with recording it. I solved it, the transition file was preventing the recording in Animation mode.

Update! The outline appears if you use Invert on the image (in Photoshop) to create the displacement map. If you use colour overlay option, the line does not show. I hope it helps someone.
