Avatar Disapears after adding .ai file

New here with the software, I've been practicing for the last couple weeks. I'm trying to import a pattern from .ai and every time I do the avatar disappears and I the window looks weird. I've exported as pdf and added that way and still same issue. Any ideas?

  UPDATE: I got it to work, the default was putting it in at 2500% scale, why would it do that? That's ridiculous. I tried to type in to change it to 100% scale but it wouldn't let me type. I had to hold the down arrow key for about 5 minutes until I finally got down to 100%. Anyone know how to work around this?
