Flattening causing repeat crash

I have been having a lot of trouble with flattening causing a crash. I've imported a 3d file created elsewhere as an avatar and am trying to create pattern pieces from its surface with the 3d pen tool. It's not a complicated shape but it is continually crashing. Any help would be welcome.
