Using the Low-Res Garment Tool – Fine-Tuning or Fixing Any Deformation of the Garment
Reapplying the Hi-Res Garment Tool
- This tutorial will cover how to enhance the quality of a garment.
- Open the file, Jacket_Enhancing the Quality, for this exercise. (Download the practice files before starting this tutorial.)
- To do so, navigate to the CLO Tutorial folder, which was previously added in the Introduction to CLO tutorial, within the Library. Go to D_Fine Tuning, then d_Enhancing the Quality of a Garment. Double click on the file, Jacket_Enhancing the Quality, or drag and drop it into either the 3D or 2D Window.
Using the Hi-Res Garment Tool
- Hi-Res Garment
- To enhance the quality of a garment, Particle Distance, Add'l Thickness - Collision, Skin Offset, and Simulation Quality must be adjusted. Use theHi-Res Garment function to edit their values.
- Navigate to the 3D Toolbar and select theHi-Res Garment tool. A pop-up window will appear with options for the Garment, Avatar, and Simulation, that can be adjusted. Click OK to apply the settings.
- To learn more about theHi-Res Garment tool, reference the index Hi-Res Garment.
- The Default Setting
- The default setting of the Hi-Res Garment function is appropriate in most cases.
- The default setting is as follows: Particle Distance = 5.0mm, Add'l Thickness - Collision = 1.0mm, Skin Offset = 0.0mm, and Simulation Quality = Complete. - Deselecting the Add'l Thickness - Collision
- In cases where Patterns need to have different Add'l Thickness - Collision values, such as a garment with shoulder pads, uncheck the checkbox next to the Add'l Thickness option so that the value (1mm) is not applied to all of them.
- Shoulder pads have been included in this file. The 3D Garment and the shoulder pads will have different Add'l Thickness - Collision values. Uncheck the checkbox next to Add'l Thickness - Collision. Click OK to apply the changes. - Simulation
- Once the Hi-Res Garment tool has been applied and the Simulation Quality has been changed to Complete, the Simulate icon will change from asingle arrow to a
double arrow. Turn on Simulation—the icon will glow orange to reflect the change as well. Simulation will take longer but drape more accurately. Turn off Simulation when the 3D Garment is fully Simulated.
- Adjusting the Add'l Thickness - Collision
- To enhance the quality of the garment even further, adjust the Add'l Thickness - Collision.
- Select all the Patterns except the shoulder pad Patterns. Select theTransform Pattern tool from the 2D Toolbar. In the 2D grid, click and drag over all the Patterns. Make sure the Patterns are fully encompassed within the marquee box. While holding down the Shift key, deselect the shoulder pad Patterns by clicking on them. Now that only the 3D Garment Patterns are selected, navigate to the Property Editor and change their Add'l Thickness - Collision value to 1.
- Activate Simulate to apply changes and check for any deformation of the 3D Garment.
Using the Low-Res Garment Tool – Fine-Tuning or Fixing Any Deformation of the Garment
- For this section of the tutorial, open the file Dress_Enhancing the Quality.
- To do so, hover over the folder, d_Enhancing the Quality of a Garment, within the Library. Double click on the file, Dress_Enhancing the Quality, or drag and drop it into either the 3D or 2D Window.
- Low-Res Garment
- Occasionally, the garment may deform during Simulation. As previously mentioned, changing the Simulation Quality to Complete (via theHi-res Garment function) slows down Simulation considerably. Making changes to the 3D Garment after applying this change is not recommended.
- Instead, lower the resolution of the garment to fix any issues that may have occurred during Simulation with theLow-Res Garment tool.
- Navigate to the 3D Toolbar and select theLow-Res Garment tool. A pop-up window will appear with options for the Garment, Avatar, and Simulation, that can be adjusted. Click OK to apply the settings.
- The Default Setting
- The default setting of theLow-Res Garment function is appropriate in most cases.
- The default setting is as follows: Particle Distance = 20.0mm, Add'l Thickness - Collision = 2.5mm, Skin Offset = 3.0mm, and Simulation Quality = Normal. - Adjusting Particle Distance
- If the difference between the Particle Distance values before and after enhancing the quality of the garment is too wide, the general drape of the 3D Garment can change dramatically. To avoid this, change the Particle Distance as needed.
- For this specific file, adjust the Particle Distance to 10.
- Once the Low-Res Garment tool has been applied, the Simulate icon will revert from a
double arrow to a
single arrow.
- Fine-tuning a Garment
- For this particular exercise, fine-tune the portions around the Armholes. WhileSimulate is still activated, use the
Select/Move tool from the 3D Toolbar to pull and straighten crumpled parts of the garment.
- Fixing Deformation of the Garment
- If the 3D Garment has Simulated improperly, fix the issues as needed.
- Reference the Fixes category to view the appropriate tutorials.
Reapplying the Hi-Res Garment Tool
- Up the resolution of the 3D Garment by selecting the tool from the 3D Toolbar.
Simulate once more.
