Can't say I've made something like that, but I would assume it's possible by assembling dome shapes together and apply pressure where necessary to achieve similar volume. I'm sure they're are many ...

Have you tried reducing the fabric's particle distance under the property editor? It's less likely for materials to go through each other when then mesh is smaller.
