Displacement maps advice
Hi, I've been playing around with the new displacement maps, trying to mimic this texture, which is silicone cast on fabric:
I'm getting this weird effect where the displacement map is 'floating' on the surface of the fabric seemingly disconnected from the surface below:
Looking for tips on how to resolve this. I want the displacement map to be connected to the fabric below it. Using a gaussian blur doesn't seen to resolve this. It's probably a setting I have missed. But can't find anything in the Clo forums or instructions to help me figure out what I might be doing.

Another question, why is my seam taping showing on the outside of the fabric. I haven't used this feature much so again, likely I am missing something simple

I would try two things:
1. Reduce or try the clipping back to zero.
2. Blur the transition from black to white a little bit, so you can get some gray tones in the transition. That way the displacement doesn't happen so sudden.

When you mean blur the transition, do you mean in the original images? I played around with a couple grey images, A grey Blur image and different Amount numbers and I'm still getting the same issue.

Here is the deal.
1. I see from your screenshots that you are using a black background and white rectangles. To eliminate the black from the background that is when you use clipping. You could use a transparent background too with white rectangles. In that case, you will have to use SHIFT instead of CLIPPING to avoid transparency to seep through to your rectangles.
2. Your displacement map seems to be white background with black rectangles. This map should be black (not transparent) background and white rectangles.
3. You have to blur the transition so there is not a jump from black to white. You can see in my images how it looks without and with blurring.

Hi Pablo,
I really appreciate your help with this. Unfortunately I have repeatedly tried all your suggestions and its not resolving the issue. Seems like no matter what I do I keep getting the floating effect. I have not once gotten this file, or a few other test files to show the effect you are showing. Maybe this is an issue with Clo, although I more likely think there is something very minor I am just missing.
In some of my earlier attempts to get a displacement map I tried using a white background and Clo raised the background off of the garment instead of the rectangular shapes. I've tried again with various uses of the shift and clipping function, this time with a transparent background and white on black displacement image and am still having the same issue. Same thing happens when I use a blurred image.
Not sure if you have any other magical solutions for me. Not sure what to do to resolve this...

Also not sure why in this last attempt, the displaced part is black, this was happening before and is why I switched the images of displacement to texture. maybe there is some clue here though...

Hi elizafisher, I followed the recent Webinar about 5.1 new features ( the one in Spanish) in which they said that to avoid the displacement stuff floating above the fabric to give negative value, -1 mm, -2mm to the shift of the map. It's the option just below the amount.

Thanks for the suggestion. I've tried this actually, seems to be doing the floating thing regardless of what I do in terms of positive or negative shifts. And regardless of how many time I remake the original displacement files.
After trying to figure this out for the last 7 days, I will definitely post the files when I finally figure it out... if I ever do lol

Hi guys.I figured out the problem.
There are no settings to scale (transform) the displacement map. So, when you added the original graphic and you scaled it to a smaller size, and then you applied the displacement map, the texture file was smaller than the displacement map and the black rectangles didn't match the displacement. That is why they were like floating.
This has to be feedback for CLO. You will first add your graphic texture and then the displacement. Then, you will have to adjust the size of the graphic so both graphic and displacement map scale at the same time.
The other option is to use 72 dpi as resolution in Photoshop and make sure both, displacement and texture have the correct size.
Bottomline, you cannot transform (scale or rotate) the graphic and then add a displacement map. You have to transform after adding the displacement map.
One another thing, apparently the particle distance is not low enough for the details you want to add Eliza,
As Daniele mentioned, if you use a transparent texture (graphic) you will need to increase the AMOUNT and have a negative SHIFT to avoid transparent spaces.

I actually didn't scale the files in Clo. It's worth noting that the original files were exported from AI to a PNG and a JPG. When they were exported they came out with different sizes. Not sure if this is a changeable export setting or something that just needs to be corrected in PS after the export. But this rather than a scale or move in Clo would be the reason for size differences in the file.
Also I'm not surprised that scaling the texture up worked. I tend to try to push the limits of like everything in terms of texture and design. So I guess when I do the render of this garment I will have the adapt the texture to fit what Clo can render. I'm assuming that I shouldn't put the particle distance lower than 1 for the sake of not crashing Clo.

Hi Eliza,
I had the same problem yesterday, the displacement makes the graphic floating in the air. So I just figured out that if you apply gaussian blur to your base texture (the .png), it stays connected to the fabric !

I can only get my displacement map texture to work within CLO's in built renderer. How can I apply it to an exported animation?
