Swimwear in CLO vs. MD
Swimwear and underwear is very particular because of the fit. I know you can make "unreal" things in CLO, but that is not what we want. Those "unreal" things are best suited for MD.
Has any one come to a good method of creating swimwear, particularly the top following the contour of the bust without having to force the shape with pins and such?
Thanks!

Hi Pablo,
I completely agree with all the things ottoline as said above! If you are testing your materials and making sure your avatars/fabrics/patterns/etc have the same properties as your real life samples, using CLO for fitting and production is not an issue. You should never have to use pins to fit garments or hold things in place unless you are styling them for marketing/merchandising purposes.
Since swimwear is generally super stretchy and contoured to the body, you'll want to be using the same lycra/spandex fabrics and work a lot with the elastic functions.
In this example, these bottoms have Elastic set to 80% where you would probably have an elastic band or binding in real life. The ratio can be different depending on your specs (you can check the 3D line length and 2D line length and compare it to your relaxed/stretched measurements). Then once you get the specs/fit to where you want it, you can embellish with topstitching, other trims, and etc.
For bustier tops, you can create little pieces of boning or reinforce your seams with Bonding to get the kind of construction you want. Also, check out this forum post for some insight from other users interested in boning.
Ultimately, the amount of accuracy you have is up to you and depends on how far you need to go with it. I would say the best things to have when starting out is an Avatar that matches specs, an accurate digital pattern, and a couple of base swim fabrics (there are a couple poly/spandex fabrics on the Marketplace that might be usable).
I hope this is helpful!

Thanks for your comments. Lots of insight in your comments. I recently started using Curved Side Geometry so simulate strings and the elastic bands. Found it here

Hi clod3.
Part 1 of your questions. What the the Particle Distance of your pattern pieces set to? If the Particle distance is still set to 20 the avatar can easily clip through the garment. I would suggest lowering to 8 or possible 5. This will increase the detail of your garment and help to prevent clipping. Other notes that may be helpful is to switch your view in the 3D toggle from Textures Surface to Thick textured Surface. Also, is there a reason that strengthen has been applied to the entire garment? This most likely should be removed before you animate.
Part 2. Which fabric have you applied the pattern pieces? If the fabric has a lot of stretch that is one reason it may be happening. Another thing that you can do is apply elastic to the cut out edges at 100%. This will prevent the cut our from stetching
Hope this helps and let us know if you have anymore questions

Hello!
I'm also working on swimwear and need to be able to show it without the avatar. But I'm struggling with the crotch as avatar leg poses are quite close together which crunches up the fabric between the legs. how can I get a smooth finish on the crotch without the avatar?
Help appreciated!

Hi Aann. using avatars from DAZ and spreding the legs wider and modifying the crotch a little bit wider too. After fixing the avatar you will have the CLO particle distance issue too. What I did was to use several options to strengthen that area (like in real life) cutting the crotch area in a different piece and using bonding to simulate the lining you generally find the in the crotch area.
In case your design does not include a cut out crotch piece you can always make it look like one single piece by bringing the 3D intensity effect of the seam to 0.
I hope this helps.

Hi Everyone! Was reading your comments and i'm learning to design swimwear patterns on clod so those comments are very interesting. Do you know how to add the rubber look on the edge of the fabric? (the link from Pablo does not work) And if i want to make reversible pieces, do you know i can configure that? And one last question to you PROS, if i want my swimsuit to be made with lining, should i also do it on CLOD? How?

Hey BDC!
Can you share an image of what the rubber look looks like, so we can help you find out the best technique?
For reversible pieces that are identical on both sides, you could simply use colorways and swap the fabrics. Yes, you can use lining in CLO. The simplest way is to clone the outer layer once is done by using Layer Clone (Under) when right clicking on each piece.
Welcome to the community!
There are many resources on the internet. You can learn from the Marvelous Designer tutorials and forums too and practice a lot.

Hi Pablo, Still didn't figure out about the reversible swimwear option, neither the lining insertion, but i'll try to look for some videos...
Regarding the elastic how can i send you the picture of the elastic and also the edge of one piece swimsuit (after it's done)? I want to simulate the real look of the swimsuit edge on the 3d..
And one last question, once i subscribe to Clod3d, will i get the the right to all the updates? Do you have a help center or maybe can i buy private lessons?

Here is the image of the elastic, and also the edge on a reversible swimsuit and also a non reversible with lining only and the elastic on the edge. I already saw that we should do a fold and adjust strength, but still trying to find out how! Missing some videos specific fro swimwear!

Hey BDC. In this case the elastic is encased depending on how real you'd want this part to look I would simply cut the piece at the elastic width and increase thickness. Let me show you here:
As for private lessons, you can find people here in the forums who do that. If you want to contact me please write to pablo.quintana at forastyle.com

Hello , how to fix the problem in the back?
0 -
Hi a125ggtr. Can you please specify what you are trying to fix. This could be a problem with your pattern not fitting to your avatar properly. Looks like your swim suit may be too long so it is bunching at the waist. Or you may be able to fix with the steam tool

Hello, I am currently trying to create a walking animation of a swimsuit I had designed. I am having no issues with fit until I begin to simulate / load the walking animation. Once I begin to load the animation, the garment pulls and goes through the body at the crotch and the 'mock' neck pattern section. I am hoping for help on how to eliminate the fabric shift when I am in the animation window.

I am also having another issue with one of my cut out section on the front pattern piece. The cutout directly placed over the bust is deforming and stretching on the model. I have made this swimsuit in real life and when it is fitted on the model, it does not deform or stretch nearly as much. You can see it my attachments that the shape substantially elongates once it is in Simulation mode. I have included a photo of the physical garment as well for reference for what I am trying to achieve. I am hoping to receive feedback on steps to prevent this stretch / stiffen the cutout sections.
Thank you!! So much.

Hello,
Thank you so much for your response. I will troubleshoot my file tomorrow. My current particle distance was lowered to 15, but my computer can most likely handle a lower distance. I will try lowering it further, that is a great suggestion.
The I am using a cotton / span blend fabric from Clo-Set. Do you know of a fabric that still represents swimwear well in an animation, but with a little less stretch? Regardless, I do not have elastic in any of the cutout sections. There are brlliant suggestions as I have tried most of the steps above to work through my issue.
Thank you so much for your suggestions!! I will follow back up with the results :)
