More Features and Tweaks I'd like to see
Ok. So, I always keep a notepad file and write down these things as I work. Now, they are mostly small annoyances, and if the developers are working on stuff like improving the simulation engine or adding rigid body physics or softbody avatars, by all means, ignore this. And I also totally understand that some of this stuff might not work just on a technical level or it might not fit with the way its designed to be used. But. You DID make a forum called "Product Feedback" so I'm gonna give it.
1. Sometimes I need to copy and paste an internal line within a pattern and snap one end of the internal line to a segment point on the pattern, but when I select the line, the entire pattern outline turns blue including the segment points, and it's very, very, VERY hard to see where the segment points are. The segment points need to be a contrasting color at all times so you can see them.
2. After you extend/trim to pattern outline the line is automatically deselected. this is SUPER annoying, the line should stay selected. A lot of what I use extend/trim for is to cut a piece, so I'll hit the hotkey for extend and the I'll try and hit the hotkey for cut or maybe offset, but it deselects the line, and it's just very annoying.
3. It would be helpful to be able to select two sewing line start/end points at once, so if I want to adjust the sewing on a shoulder for example, to create easing and I have 2 sewing lines I'd like to be able to select both points and slide them together.
4. I use uniform split ALL THE TIME. if there were a way to split a line evenly without having to right click and then go into the dialog box and select "uniform split" that would be awesome, if the add point tool could snap to the halfway point on segments like the internal line tool does, or have a hotkey to press that would make it snap to the halfway point.
5. Fabric pattern outlines should have an option to be highlighted in the 3d window, kind of like how internal lines can be overlayed in red lines, pattern outlines should have this too. It would be very helpful to distinguish edges.
6. In the library, I usually have the the files displayed as icons and not as a list, the problem is, with icons the file names get cut off after only 6 or 7 letters, and this is really frustrating when I'm trying to find a file that's iterative, like "Shirt_Side_Dart_2" or just any file name longer than 6 letters. If it would display the full file name when you hovered over the file or some way to identify the full file name easily that would be very helpful.
7. A button in the environment display for toggling gravity on and off. As well as some kind of small visual icon to indicate that the gravity is off, I keep forgetting that it's off and wondering why my fabric is being stupid.
8. When a pattern is frozen or deactivated it shouldn't be affected by the circumference measuring tool when you create an internal line with it. So only the piece that is active is cut or has the internal line applied to it.
9. When you group patterns, setting sublayers should apply to the entire group. (for example, belt loops that need to be in front of a belt)
10. There needs to be a way to save a garment "state", because a lot of times I fit something really well, but then I need to make some cuts or add some pleats that creatively, I'm not 100% sure about, and if it turns out wrong I don't want to have to undo a whole bunch, but rather be able to revert to that original state. What I do now is make a copy of what I'm working on then deactivate and hide it. This actually works ok, but the process is a chore and sometimes I accidentally activate it. and it also doesn't restore in the original 3d space location. I think there should be a dedicated function that basically does that, like a "drop to canvas" that would create an outline in the 2d window but wouldn't exist in the scene and that could be restored at anytime. it would help so much with making edits and not worrying about messing things up.
11. When you adjust a garment piece in the 2d window, like adjusting the scale or moving a pivot, and the simulation is turned on, the simulation will automatically turn off after you've made the adjustment. If there were some way the simulation would automatically turn off AS SOON as you start to make an adjustment to the pattern that would be awesome. So many times I've accidentally forgotten and left the sim active and then made an adjustment in the 2d window and the whole program lags horribly while I move or scale something but as soon as I finish the sim turns off and everything is fast again. Having the sim automatically stop at the beginning of the process rather than the end it would make working so much smoother and nicer.
12. I'm not 100% sure on this one, but I'd like to see it as an option you could turn on or off, kinda like how you can turn on/off automatically offsetting patterns after you cut them. What I'd like is an option so when you delete a symmetrically linked pattern piece it deletes both pattern pieces. I've been thinking about this and it seems like most of the time I delete one symmetric pattern piece I also want the other one deleted, but again I'm not totally sure on this one.
13. Another thing I'm not sure about is the lasso select. I really like the idea of double clicking to lasso select, and I've really tried to get used to it, but in practice it's just cumbersome to use, I love the lasso select being a global modifier, just... not on double click. But again, this is something I don't really love but I don't exactly have a better way to do it either.
14. Oh! Another kind of half baked idea is some kind of "magnetic" or "proximity" sewing tool, it would sew pieces together if the proximity of the two edges in the 3d window was close enough and the line lengths matched close enough. For example a waistband that you make in two halves, in the 2d window if you hovered over one edge it would automatically select the other edge to sew, so you don't have to scroll the 2d window. This would be especially helpful for small pieces of trim that have small edges and are very spread out in the 2d view.
As always, thanks for reading!
