Case 1 (There are Pattern points that are too close together)
Case 2 (Pattern outlines are intersecting)
Case 3 (This is an unsupported file type.)
Objective
Learn how to fix AI import failures respective to the types of error messages.
Cause of Error: When the points on the patterns are too close to each other.
Solution A - Delete & Join Points in Adobe Illustrator
- Open the file with issue in the Adobe Illustrator.
- Find points too closed to each other and delete one of them.
→ As the point is deleted, the line is disconnected. - Use the Average and Join function to reconnect the line.
- Save the file again and open in CLO.
→ The pattern file opens properly in CLO.
Solution B - Adjust Pattern Size in CLO
- Navigate to the Main Menu and select File > Import > Adobe (AI/PDF).
→ The Import AI/PDF window appears. - Deselect Auto Scale.
-
Increase the Scale percentage or select larger pattern unit and select OK.
→ The pattern file opens properly.
※ Note:
- If the pattern file still does not open properly, further increase the Scale percentage or select even larger pattern unit. Then, open the file again.
- When the percentage and the unit is changed, the size of the pattern imported in CLO may differ from the original pattern size.
Case 2
Cause of Error: When the lines on patterns are intersecting.
Solution
- Open the file with issue in Adobe Illustrator.
- Find and edit the intersecting lines.
- Save the file and re-open in CLO.
→ The file opens properly.
Cause of Error A: When the Create PDF Compatible File option is not checked when saving the file in Adobe Illustrator.
Solution
- Open the file with issue in Adobe Illustrator.
- Navigate to the Main Menu > File > Save as...
- Assign the saving path and the file name. Then, click Save.
- Check Create PDF Compatible File and click OK.
- Reopen the file in CLO.
→ The file opens properly.
Cause of Error B: When a line of a pattern is disconnected.
Solution
- Open the file with issue in Adobe Illustrator.
- Find the disconnected pattern outline.
- Use the Average and Join function to reconnect the line.
- Save the file again and open in CLO.
→ The pattern file opens properly in CLO.
※ Note:
- For Case 2 and Case 3, create a rectangle surrounding all patterns with issue, save in Adobe Illustrator, and then reopen in CLO as internal lines to open them without any pattern modification.
- To use the Internal Lines as Patterns, use the Trace tool or the Clone as Pattern option to convert Internal Lines to Patterns.

I managed to upload a pdf file that is 27.9MB. However the uploaded file does not show the original picture, I can only see black colour blank piece.
Hi @michellesbody,
Would you please share the problematic pdf file via any platform you would like to use?
Additionally, do you face the problem with all pdf files or just one?
Best,
Lea.
Only the note regarding enclosing all curves within a rectangle was useful. Modern versions of Illustrator no longer have the 'Create PDF Compatible File' option available. I had a dxf of the drawing (a single outline) but because it wasn't structured with the layer requirements of the arcane aama standard it wasn't accepted either. There is a remarkable 8 step solution to this here, but requires yet another software import/export so good luck with that... https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/autocad-forum/autocad-export-to-dxf-aama-or-dxf-astm/td-p/7014285
I managed to solve the case 1 issue only by retracing the pattern. This way the path was definitely closed and the file imported without an issue.
I keep having problems importing my PDF blocks into Clod. I really think you should solve this and this should not be an issue, it should be straight forward.
I keep having problems importing my .ai/.pdf blocks into CLO as well. Tried the solutions in Case 1 but still in vain. When I go for higher import with pattern unit = meter the application just stop responding. This is an issue that requires immediately fix. Please look into it thanks.
I might have found a workaround for case1 (point to close).
After removing excess/too close points and re-joining them, I lock the pattern and trace it. Ahter tracing it, I delete the pattern pieces that were causing trouble. The tracing ensures a closed shape and there is no more issue importing it.
